ABA LEGAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND


The fund provides ethnic and racial minority students applying to law school with financial assistance to ensure they have the opportunity to attend for all three years. Applicants must be entering, first-year law students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Appplications are available online.

ALLEN E. BROUSSARD SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships are available to all minority students and are intended to help defray the costs of tuition and related expenses for promising future lawyers whose academic achievement, dedication to public service and strong character are in keeping with the late Justice Broussard's beliefs. Because of a unique partnership with the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarships Fund, applicants interested in the Broussard Scholarship need only to complete the Legal Opportunity application.


AMERICAN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation, the Sidney B. Williams Jr. Scholarship addresses the need to increase the number of minority intellectual property attorneys and to bring these attorneys to the attention of firms and corporations as candidates for employment The $10,000 Law Scholarships will be awarded to minority students developing a career in intellectual property law. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is assisting the Foundation by administering the application and selection process.


ATLA RICHARD D. HAILEY LAW STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships are open to all first- and second-year African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, Native America, and Bi-Racial law student members of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA). A 500-word essay about how you meet the criteria as well as up to three recommendations from a faculty adviser, trial advocacy professor, dean, ATLA member and/or trial lawyer are required. Applications are available on the ATLA website. Scholarships will be awarded to the applicants who best meet, but not limited to, the criteria listed below:
1. exhibit an interest and proficiency of skills in trial advocacy;
2. express a desire to represent victims;
3. demonstrate a commitment to ATLA and dedication to its mission through involvement in an ATLA student chapter and Minority Caucus activities;
4. show a financial need for the scholarship.

This West Coast law firm established a scholarship to increase diversity in the legal profession and within their law firm. The recipient must commit to work at their Sacramento office as a summer associate after his or her first year of law school. FOLEY & LARDNER MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Foley & Lardner Minority Scholarship Program will award one scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to a first-year student at Boalt who is a member of one of the following racial/ethnic groups as defined by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance programs: American Indian/Alaskan Native; Asian/Pacific Islander; Black; or Hispanic.     LINN INN MARK T. BANNER SCHOLARSHIP

    The Linn Inn Mark T. Banner Scholarship is open to law students pursuing a career in intellectual property law. The applicant must be a member of a historically underrepresented group (including race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability) and must have exemplary writing and oral communication skills. The scholarship is part of the Richard Linn American Inn of Court’s commitment to fostering the development of intellectual property lawyers from diverse backgrounds.


    MILBANK DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

    The firm provides Diversity Scholarships to create opportunities to bring about a more diverse workplace. Each year, Milbank will name up to five scholarship recipients who will be offered a salaried summer associate position in one of the firm's three domestic offices and a $15,000 scholarship to be distributed at the beginning of a student's third year of law school. Students who are members of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms are encouraged to apply. Factors considered in the selection include academic achievement, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent writing and interpersonal skills and a sincere interest in Milbank's practice.     WILEY MANUEL LAW FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

    Wiley William Manuel (1927-1981) was the first African American California Supreme Court Justice. Justice Manuel was deeply concerned about the social, economic, and legal problems facing persons of color. The Foundation awards scholarships to Northern California law students who best exemplify the qualities of the late Justice Wiley.

    WOMBLE CARLYLE SCHOLARS PROGRAMS

    Established in 2004, the Womble Carlyle Scholars Program awards scholarships to diverse rising second year law students who present solid academic credentials, personal achievement outside the school environment, and significant participation in community service.  This program is designed to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the bar.  The scholarship is awarded to diverse law students at schools in most of the states in which the firm has offices.
    In addition to the scholarship, an offer of summer employment as a Summer Associate in one of the firm's eleven offices is extended to the Scholar after his/her second year of law school.  The Scholar may choose to work at the firm all, half(at least six weeks), or none of the summer.  The firm will determine in which office the Scholar works, but every effort will be made to satisfy the Scholar's office preference.  Scholar salaries during the summer will be the same as the firm's other Summer Associates in each office.
    The scholarship application consists of two parts and may be submitted separately.  A complete application, cover letter and resume are to be submitted by May 15,2009.  The final portion of the scholarship application is due by Tuesday, July 7, 2009
